I think the highlights on your model...The LeadHead:
I think the highlights on your model are much brighter than mine. Yours are definitely noticeable while with mine you have to look at the underside of the model and then back at the top to notice any difference. But, that's what test models are for.

If you think that's brave you should have heard my original plans. Same blue carapace, yellow skin, with pinkish-red and turquoise details. The yellow skin is what really turned me off of that idea. That and the fact that my army would have looked like spilled a bag of skittles all over the table. The current paint scheme is a piece of cake compared to the original plan and I think it looks much better. If you haven't seen it yet, there are more details on the old plan and a color wheel showing the colors I would have used in the first half of this post:
http://maximumheresy.blogspot.com/2011/04/big-news-time-also-bit-on-tyranid.html

My plans for the current paint scheme and some of my sources of inspiration for the various parts of it can be found in this post:
http://maximumheresy.blogspot.com/2011/05/hobby-update-tyranids-finally.html

Just in case you're interested.Chaosheadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11905587383925116811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4032085564411071569.post-81131948952279804572011-05-29T21:19:34.041-04:002011-05-29T21:19:34.041-04:00Chaosheade -
Those look great! You're a brave...Chaosheade -

Those look great! You're a brave man to go with that color scheme for your 'nids - I was going to do something similar with the genestealers from my copy of Space Hulk, but I chickened out and did the standard blue/black scheme.

I know what you mean about "not highlighting enough" - I kinda wish I had bumped the brightness of my highlight color up a bit. Oh well, lesson learned for next time...BigPaul1ehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09209550428128152898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4032085564411071569.post-85715814533042789792011-05-27T21:17:03.753-04:002011-05-27T21:17:03.753-04:00Looks good. I just tried my hand at zenithal high...Looks good. I just tried my hand at zenithal highlights for the first time last week on my Tyranid test models. I fell instantly in love with the technique. I can base coat a whole army with highlights and shadows in a fraction of the time compared to my CSM using black gesso primer, then Vallejo equivalent of Adeptus Battlegray followed by 2-3 heavy black washes. Much faster and looks much better too. That tutorial you linked is a great place to start with zenithal highlights.

Also, red is usually considered one of the harder colors to work with but an airbrush makes it easy as pie. Same with white and yellow.

I'll just slip this on in here if you don't mind. Some examples so you can see how my first zenithal experiment worked out and compare notes. In particular, the second picture shows the difference between the shadowed underbelly and the lighter parts on top. I think I didn't highlight enough but that's an easy fix for the next attempt.
http://maximumheresy.blogspot.com/2011/05/tyranid-painting-test-models-completed.htmlChaosheadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11905587383925116811noreply@blogger.com
